If you love understanding how things work and exploring individual components of machines and structures, there’s a good chance you’re considering engineering as an area of study. On this engineering summer course, you’ll explore the differences between mechanical, civil and electrical engineering — and build your very own engine.


Students learn the principles of engineering science. Both world-renowned and local examples are examined, and the findings are applied to a variety of case studies to solve mechanical, structural, and architectural problems. They complete the course by designing a model engineering project of their own.


The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful Engineering research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during the morning class though, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete them. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Research projects might include designing a campus energy monitoring system, researching the feasibility of recycling bottles into clothing, analyzing how blade-shape affects the power output of small-scale wind turbines, analyzing the impact of additive manufacturing on aerospace component design, evaluating small-scale designs for capturing CO₂ directly from air, researching storage and transport challenges of hydrogen as a clean fuel. Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.


The Explore Engineering & Technology Summer School at Cambridge offers students aged 12–15 an immersive introduction to Civil, Mechanical, Biomedical, and Aerospace engineering. Through hands-on design simulations, collaborative challenges like the ‘Mission to Mars’, and expert teaching, students build foundational skills in math, physics, and problem-solving. Aerospace Engineering is quite literally "rocket science!" Participants examine the disciplines most important to the industry, including aerodynamics, electronics, mechanics, operations systems, statistics, and thermodynamics. The course culminates with the replication of real design offices of aircraft and spacecraft companies. Students go through every stage in the creation of a new vehicle, including aerodynamic profiling, engine sizing, and structural design.
