Explore what makes our world work and how innovation can shape its future. This course invites students to delve into the principles of engineering, creative problem-solving, and sustainable design to tackle real-world challenges from renewable energy to smart cities. Perfect for those who love to design, build, and make a difference.
Over two weeks, students explore engineering design thinking, Sustainable Development Goals, global challenge areas, sketching, technical drawing, 3D design development, prototyping, testing and professional presentation, with themes including energy, transport, water, waste, sanitation and the built environment.
Students learn through university-style seminars, design workshops, technical drawing tasks, prototyping activities and guided project work, delivered in collaboration with University of Bath faculty staff. As part of their course, students complete an Engineering Design Challenge, developing a sustainable solution, prototype or model before presenting their final concept to practising engineers during an industry-focused visit.
Upon completion, students are awarded a University of Bath certificate, subject tutor report and Masterclass feedback. This subject is delivered in collaboration with University of Bath faculty staff and led by James Norman, a University of Bath lecturer, civil and structural engineer, and specialist in sustainable design. James has worked on major projects including Tate Modern and the Ferrari Experience in Abu Dhabi.
Beyond the classroom, students will enjoy a wide range of extracurricular activities that run from morning to night - from lively evening socials to moments of quiet reflection. They’ll hear from inspiring guest speakers, visit another university campus, take part in multiple excursions across the UK designed to complement both the academic and cultural experience, and engage in shared activities with peers from around the world. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the historic city of Bath, discovering its heritage from Roman bathhouses to elegant Georgian crescents.
Students will stay in premium, en-suite university accommodation and use professional-standard teaching spaces, from engineering labs and design studios to bright, purpose built lecture halls. Just a stones throw away from the city centre, the campus is set on 200 acres of parkland with panoramic views over the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath.
