Academy Royale International's Medicine & Modern Healthcare summer school gives students aged 12 to 15 a two-week introduction to medicine in Oxford or Cambridge. You learn how the body works, practise clinical skills and work through real patient cases, just like a medical student. Since 2004, we've welcomed students from more than 175 countries to live and study in historic university colleges.
Our Medicine & Modern Healthcare summer school introduces students aged 12 to 15 to life as a doctor. For two weeks, you live and study in a historic college of the University of Oxford or Cambridge and learn how doctors examine patients, reach a diagnosis and work as a clinical team.
The curriculum goes beyond school science, mixing seminars and case studies with hands-on clinical skills workshops. You don't need any prior medical knowledge, just curiosity about the human body.
You start by exploring career paths in medicine and the basics of anatomy and physiology. You then study the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous and gastrointestinal systems, plus diabetes, looking at how each system works, what goes wrong and how doctors treat it. Along the way, you learn to perform a chest examination, take patient histories and use a stethoscope.
You study oncology and create your own research poster, then debate real ethical dilemmas in medical ethics. You learn how the immune system fights infection and how vaccines work. Your final module looks at the future of healthcare, from robotic surgery to AI. Throughout the course, you gain Basic Life Support skills and practise A&E assessments in roleplayed clinical scenarios.
Leading academics and practising doctors teach you in small groups, so you get personal feedback and support. Faculty include Lily Mainwaring, NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in General Surgery at the University of Oxford, and Dr Claire Keene, a clinician who has led HIV, tuberculosis and COVID-19 projects for Médecins Sans Frontières.
You get real collegiate life: you sleep, eat and study in the same historic college. You tour colleges, museums and landmarks, and dress up for formal dinners in atmospheric dining halls with your classmates and tutors. With students from more than 175 nationalities, you make friends from across the globe.
You receive a graduation certificate, a personalised report and detailed grades, which make strong supporting materials for future medical school applications.

In some campuses, students have the option to pay our ‘En-suite Reservation Fee’, which entitles students to an en-suite room should one be available at their campus.
Contact our Admissions Team for more information. Sharing your room with fellow students is a great way of getting to know people and making friends. You can also request to share a room with someone you know studying the same course as you, though this is not guaranteed and must be done in advance of the course.
