Although called New College, the college is actually very old and was founded in 1379. The name was originally given to the college to distinguish it from Oriel College, which was founded 50 years earlier, and has stuck ever since. When thoughtfully wandering through the Cloisters, keen-eyed students might notice the famous holm oak tree, which featured in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the scene where Draco Malfoy was turned into a ferret! If you’re not interested in tales of magic and wizardry, the magnificent dining hall and emotive gargoyles may just grab your attention instead.
